Plant Nursery/Vegetable Gardening- Chitwan

Brief description

The nursery is situated in southern part of Nepal, which is 120 km far from the capital city, Katmandu and 30 km far from Royal Chitwan National Park.

The nursery consists with Verities of plants; multi-purpose tree species like China Berry, Silk Cotton, Ipil-ipil, Shisham, Bamboo, etc., Fruits like Litchi, Mango, Jackfruit, etc., and Flowers like Bougainvillea, Croton, Hibiscus, Gardenia, etc. It also grows fresh vegetables for the orphan kids.

Main aims and Activities

The purpose of nursery is to produce seedling, distributing them to the local farmers and partners and planting them in the conservation areas. At the same time, it has helped a lot to train local partners and local farmers.

The Nursery has a local coordinator who manages the plants and other necessary materials regarding Nursery.

Volunteer tasks & Role
  • To collect the seeds, place them in right order, Planting
  • Create fence around the conservation areas and nurseries.
  • To water the plants
  • Weeding, mulching and sowing
  • Landscaping, transplanting
  • Search for seedlings, Bed building

If possible, run some conservation and environment awareness classes for the local community people in co-ordination with local staff.

Generally volunteers will work 10 am- 5 PM in the afternoon with couple of breaks in between. But you can be bit flexible and manage your time in coordination with local staff.

You work 30hrs a minimum in a week.

Volunteer skills
  • Volunteers should have patience and be interested in working in the field.
  • Be motivated to learn Nepali language.
  • Volunteers should be over 18 year.
Location

The Conservation Project is located in a village called West Rampur Chitwan, which is about 140km from Kathmandu. Internet access is available in the main city which is about 30 minutes drive from the project.

Volunteers stay with a host family. You will have your private room. Indoor plumbing facility and electricity is available.

Food

Volunteers will get three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Normally you eat rice, lentil soup and curry for lunch and dinner and bread and tea for breakfast.

What to bring!

Camera, Mobile phone (you can use mobile phone after changing sim card), Sleeping bag, Mosquito repellents, Insect repellents, Sun-block, Map of Nepal, Toiletries, First aid kit, Flash light, Electricity adopter/converter, Sun glasses, Footwear (for work and travel), Towel, etc.

Volunteers can join this project on the 1st of every month (this date can be flexible so we also can change it as per the situation) except mid October to mid November because there is a month Holyday due to the greatest festival Dashain and Tihar.

Weather /Clothes:

From mid-September to March, light clothing is fine in the Kathmandu Valley. For evenings and early mornings, a heavy woollen sweater or a paded anorak or jacket will be needed.

From April - September only light clothes, preferably cotton, are needed in Kathmandu. Avoid synthetic fibres which irritate the skin.
