Vaishnavi Lower Secondary School

Brief description

Vaishnavi Secondary School is a government school and the government provides financial support to pay for the teachers and other infrastructures that are needed for the school. This school teaches a variety of subjects, including English, grades 1 to 10. It has approximately 350 students with 20 staff members.

Main aims and Activities

This school provides education and courses to 350 children from grade 1 to 10 in a range of subjects. There are 16 members of staff the school.

Volunteer tasks & Role
  • Volunteers should teach English to students from grade 1 to 10.
  • Volunteers can also teach science and maths in addition to English according to interests and skills.
  • Volunteers can organize various learning extracurricular activities through students for example, health and civic education, games, drawing, painting, sports activities, quiz contest, awareness raising activities in the community through students, debate, music class etc.
  • Develop manual according to the students need pritorizing to the listening and speaking classes.

Working hours in the school are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. six days a week (Sunday to Friday) with Saturday as it is the holiday in Nepal. Time frame will be determined by the school principal and volunteer’s interest.

Volunteer skills
  • Willing to work with children and agree with the methods and vision used in the school.
  • Willing to teach English to children of different ages and backgrounds.
  • Volunteer above 22 years of age would be preferable.
Location

The school is located in Kalanki which is West of Kathmandu and is about half an hour bus ride from the Thamel. You can have internet facility close by the school.

Accomodation

Host family with private room, indoor plumbing facility, 24-hour electricity and water supply. Due to the load shading, sometime, you may not have 24 hours facility of electricity.

During one week of orientation, you will be stay in the hostel. Our hostel is located in the heart of Kathmandu giving easy assess to main parts of the city. We have 3 cooks who will cook local food 3 times a day for you.

Food

Volunteers will get three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Normally you eat rice, lentil soup and curry for lunch and dinner and bread and tea for breakfast.

What to bring!

Camera, Mobile phone (you can use mobile phone after changing sim card), Sleeping bag, Mosquito repellents, Insect repellents, Sun-block, Map of Nepal, Toiletries, First aid kit, Flash light, Electricity adopter/converter, Sun glasses, Footwear (for work and travel), Towel, etc.

Volunteers can join this project on the 1st of every month (this date can be flexible so we also can change it as per the situation) except March and April (due to school holidays). Mid October to Mid November is also Holyday due to the greatest festival Dashain and Tihar.

Weather /Clothes:

From mid- September to March, light clothing is fine in the Kathmandu Valley. For evenings and early mornings, a heavy woollen sweater or a paded anorak or jacket will be needed.

From April - September only light clothes, preferably cotton, are needed in Kathmandu. Avoid synthetic fibres which irritate the skin.
